TOXICITY OF PURE HEXACHLOROBENZENE AND HCB-CONTAMINATED PORK TO CATS

Swine were fed a diet containing hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in order to generate contaminated pork which was subsequently cooked and fed to female cats. Feeding the fresh weight equivalent of 50 g cooked pork/day/cat (1 < mg HCB/kg/day) caused marginal weight loss. Oral dosing with 10 mg/kg/day purified HCB resulted in significant weight loss, mild anemia, neutropenia and hepatomegaly. Using the residue of HCB accumulating in the cat adipose tissue as the criterion, the low doses in the pork were absorbed and retained about five times more effectively than the larger oral bolus.     

Behavior of Chromite Spinel as Related to Microstructure

The microstructure of massive, sugary, and mylonitic varieties of raw chrome ores has been examined with the aid of polished sections and the difference in the surface area and homogeneity of the natural chromite spinels has been noted. The behavior of the chromite spinels on oxidation, reduction, and with and without the additions of magnesia is illustrated in a series of photomicrographs; the complex reactions occurring are discussed briefly and their significance in the behavior of chrome ore-containing refractories in slag-free environments is indicated. The usefulness of reflected-light techniques in studying diffusion phenomena is shown for several solid-state reactions, including the formation of synthetic spinels, artificial modifications of a natural spinel, and iron oxide bursting.     

CONTRIBUTIONS OF PROJECTIVE TECHNIQUES TO ASSESSMENT OF MANAGEMENT POTENTIAL.

THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF PROJECTIVE TECHNIQUES TO ASSESSMENT-CENTER STAFF EVALUATIONS AND THE RELATIONSHIPS OF PROJECTIVE VARIABLES TO PROGRESS IN MANAGEMENT ARE PRESENTED. THE PROJECTIVE DATA WERE OBTAINED BY CODING REPORTS WRITTEN BY A CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST FROM 3 PROJECTIVE INSTRUMENTS. ANALYSES OF THE DATA SHOW THAT THE PROJECTIVE REPORTS PARTICULARLY INFLUENCED THE ASSESSMENT STAFF IN RATING SUCH CHARACTERISTICS AS WORK MOTIVATION, PASSIVITY, AND DEPENDENCY. IN ADDITION, SEVERAL OF THE PROJECTIVE VARIABLES ARE RELIABLY RELATED TO PROGRESS IN MANAGEMENT, ESPECIALLY THOSE PERTAINING TO LEADERSHIP AND ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION. TOLERATION FOR PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION AS A FUNCTION OF COPING STYLE.

INVESTIGATED WHETHER CONTINUATION OF A PATIENT IN A COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM OF COMMUNITY-BASED PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION WAS RELATED TO HIS OVERALL STYLE OF COPING BEHAVIOR. EARLY IN THE SERVICE PROGRAM, 86 EX-MENTAL-PATIENTS WERE INDEPENDENTLY RATED B8 5-7 PROFESSIONALS ON A 7-CATEGORY SCALE: FEARFUL, DEPENDENT, IMPULSIVE, SOCIALLY NAIVE, WITHDRAWN, SELF-DEPRECATORY, HOSTILE. AT THE CLOSE OF THE PROGRAM, THEY WERE CLASSIFIED INTO 3 GROUPS: 30 SS WHO COMPLETED THEIR ASSIGNED REHABILITATION PROGRAM, 30 SS WHO DROPPED OUT BEFORE COMPLETION, AND 23 SS WHO WERE ADMINISTRATIVELY TERMINATED. RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE COPING SCALE WAS A RELIABLE ASSESSMENT DEVICE. COMPLETERS WERE JUDGED AS SIGNIFICANTLY LESS IMPULSIVE AND SOCIALLY NAIVE AND SIGNIFICANTLY MORE SELF-DEPRECATORY THAN THE OTHER 2 GROUPS COMBINED; THOSE TERMINATED DIFFERED FROM DROPOUTS ONLY IN THAT THE FORMER WERE SIGNIFICANTLY MORE SOCIALLY NAIVE. N-Nitrosothiazolidine in Cured Meat Products

Since N-nitrosothiazolidine (NTHZ) formation in cure-pumped bacon has recently been linked to the heating-smoking step in bacon processing, a survey of other smoked cured meat products was conducted, Nitrosothiazolidine was detected in 23 of 70 products, other than cure-pumped bacon, in concentrations ranging from 1.7 -19.0 ppb. No correlation of NTHZ values with either residual sodium nitrite or with product type was found.     

Impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy on postnatal brain development: The potential role of glial cells

Glial cells are crucial for maintaining central nervous system (CNS) homeostasis. They actively participate in immune responses, as well as form functional barriers, such as blood-brain barrier (BBB), which restrict the entry of pathogens and inflammatory mediators into the CNS. In general, viral infections during the gestational period can alter the embryonic and fetal environment, and the related inflammatory response may affect neurodevelopment and lead to behavioral dysfunction during later stage of life, as highlighted by our group for Zika virus infection. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) induces a cytokine storm and, during pregnancy, may be related to a more severe form of the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) and also to higher preterm birth rates. SARS-CoV-2 can also affect the CNS by inducing neurochemical remodeling in neural cells, which can compromise neuronal plasticity and synaptic function. However, the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy on postnatal CNS, including brain development during childhood and adulthood, remains undetermined. Our group has recently highlighted the impact of COVID-19 on the expression of molecular markers associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, which are strongly related to the inflammatory response. Thus, based on these relationships, we discussed the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection either during pregnancy or in critical periods of neurodevelopment as a risk factor for neurological consequences in the offspring later in life, focusing on the potential role of glial cells. Thus, it is important to consider future and long-term public health concerns associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy.     

Cotyledon Structure of Resting Peanut (Arachis Hypogaea L. cv. Florunner) Seed Before and After Hydraulic Pressing

The cotyledon structure of resting peanut (Arachis hypogaea L. cv. Florunner) seed before and after hydraulic pressing was investigated with light and scanning electron microscopy. Observations were made of the appearance of cell walls and the major subcellular components: spherosomes (oil reserve bodies), aleurone grains and starch grains. Major findings include previously unreported cell wall damage and surface fissures that may be important to processors who express the oil from peanuts.     

EFFECT OF SODIUM CHLORIDE CONCENTRATION ON CALCIUM UPTAKE INTO BRINED CUCUMBERS1

Calcium from a CaCl₂ brine approximately iso-osmotic with cucumber cell sap penetrated cucumber fruit much more slowly than did calcium ions from a NaCl + CaCl₂ brine supra-osmotic with cucumber cell sap. After 96 h calcium that penetrated from the iso-osmotic brine was localized mostly in the exocarp and relatively little in the interior tissues, while calcium that penetrated from the supra-osmotic brine reached higher concentrations and was more evenly distributed among the exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp sections.     

MACERATION ACTIVITY OF AN ENDOPOLYGALACTURONASE FROM CANDIDA MACEDONIENSIS

The yeast Candida macedoniensis produces constitutively an extracellular pectinolytic enzyme with a high maceration activity; the culture filtrate is free from foreign enzyme activity. The enzyme formation is optimal under strictly anaerobic conditions with N₂ gassing. The culture medium for optimal enzyme recovery is a nutrient solution containing 1% yeast extract, 2% peptone and 10% sucrose, at pH 3, 28°C. Characterization of the enzyme showed it to be an endopolygalacturonase. The pH and temperature optima of the enzyme differ for pectic acid cleavage and maceration activity, these being 4.5 and 50—53°C and 2.5 and 40°C, respectively. The enzyme activities could not be separated from one another by protein chemical methods (analytical and preparative isoelectric focussing). Dialysis of the enzyme-containing culture filtrate did not decrease the enzyme activity. The endopolygalacturonase from Candida macedoniensis leads to the release of plant cells from the tissue, without destroying the cells by lysing the cell walls. After two hours incubation of the substrate (carrot slices), the tissue mass consisted of cell clumps of up to 15 cells.
